This isn’t much better than capitulation. Going back on your counter-move just to a promise to have a “talk”, that’s the same stuff that Putin’s been trying with Ukraine: Pull back your troops from Russian occupied territory, and Russia will promise to talk.
Ford’s given them exactly what they want just for the sake of having a face-to-face. What he should’ve done would be to say that he was willing to put withdrawing the surcharge on the table as an initial proposal on his side of the talks.
I don’t care that we can just put up the surcharge again, Ford just showed the US that he’s got a weak spine and can be bullied into withdrawing all measures at the slightest sign of agreement. Not even a promise of an agreement.

The US agreed to actually discuss the situation and potentially come to an agreement. Because of that upcoming discussion we’ll delay
adding an additional 25% (thoughthe original 25%will remain in placefor now). Should that discussion not go well, we’ll just continue with the plan to impose more tariffs.Sounds reasonable to me. None of us want this trade war. If you’re willing to negotiate an end, we’ll hear you out. That doesn’t mean we’re going to back down.
You can’t trust Trump with any deal. I’m willing to bet they’ll back down from their deal and Ford will have to bring the threat back and negotiate again, etc.
Probably; but it’s a show of good faith that we are actually willing to come to an agreement, and it’s also more opportunity for the US to hang itself on the public stage.

Why do we have to show good faith while they show zero?
Because it’s not all of America that we’re against; it’s the current administration and it’s supporters. It’s better to keep the citizens on our side, sympathetic to our problems. Especially when this administration fails and America gets around to rebuilding.
It also looks good from other nations to see we aren’t being unreasonable or cruel, just standing up for ourselves. That will help when it comes to building relationships with those other nations and allow us to strengthen trade elsewhere.
Be the bigger person. It pays off in ways that aren’t always obvious.

That’s not how I read this, this seems to be suspending the initial 25% electricity surcharge.
Looking at a few sources, I’m not entirely sure tbh.
Even so; I don’t mind showing a bit of restraint given an opportunity to negotiate an agreement. Helps demonstrate that it’s not the citizens of those states we’re upset with; they’re just caught in the crossfire between us and Washington.
We can always put the tariffs back, and in the meantime we can continue to expand into other markets and strengthen relationships with other nations.

It’s complicated. If the theater involves and end that rolls back tariffs but Trump declaring victory, its fine. Navaro was polite in press. It’s mostly an ego play with Trump. Where Canadian politicians only get elected because they are colonial governors submitted to US empire, selling us out at the end of the play, is a possibility.

We should have had a 30-day minimum cooldown before we suspend anything. And that should start from the day of Trump’s last threat.
By backing down, it shows Trump that Ontario’s leadership is weak as fuck, and he’ll keep playing games with his empty threats, further weakening our position.
Ford is still Ford, and we all knew better than to think he’d have the balls to stand up to Ontario or in unity with the rest of Canada.

Ford is a loser, agreed. But it’s a dangerous loser who ends retaliation for nothing in return from Krasnov. Murcan steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada are still going up to 50%, and we now have shown more weakness to a bully.

Ford is behaving reasonably. If it was anybody else in the receiving end this would be good news and we could hope for a compromise and resolution.

I watched the CPAC speech he just gave and now I am watching some US news, I thought it sounded like he was going down to DC to make a deal I thought he was going down for the secretary to bag him to not do the surcharge without doing anything in return. Watching some US news after it sounds like he is going down for a shake down.
As much as I hate saying it he needs to just turn off the power. Trump will get really angry and F around more with tariffs I know but he has already promised to do that soon with steal and aluminum and then reciprocal tariffs on the second.
I think killing the power gives them a security argument for military intervention. The flimsiest pretense of an argument, but if that’s what they want to do, then that will be enough.
If Quebec power was also cut off then New York would start experiencing brown outs, I do not know how the other states Ontario are surcharging would do but it needs to happen.
If I remember the Quebec power being down in 2002 or 03 there were brown outs down the east coast.
