Newb here. In my main feed, I see some posts over and over again. I see a post, click “Next” and there it is again. And again on the next page, and a couple of others I’ve already seen too. And again on the next page. (Sometimes they are cross-posts to a different /c, but mostly not.)
It’s annoying having to wade through post after post I’ve already seen.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Set main feed to “New” rather than “Active” etc.
- “Hide this post” when I see it for the third or fourth time
Are there other ways?
In your settings on the website there’s a checkbox for “Show read posts”, uncheck that. Some apps have the same feature or similar. Some apps also have an option to mark as read when you scroll past a post without opening it.
Thanks! I missed that. I’ve unticked it now and will see how it goes.
I think Lemmy has an issue with the same community existing on multiple servers and the “big stories” tend to get posted to all of them. So you’ll mark a post as read on (for example) [email protected] only to see it again a minute later on [email protected]. If this is what you’re experiencing, I don’t think there’s a solution yet, but I think some options are being worked on.
Thanks for the info.
One thing: I don’t see a “Mark as Read” button.
I might have the wrong terminology: when I say “my main feed”, I don’t mean an RSS feed in a feed reader, I just mean what I see when I go to my instance’s homepage ( https://lemmy.ca/ ) in my web browser.
I’m on lemmy.ca too. I almost exclusively do Lemmy with the Jerboa app on my phone which has a setting to automatically mark as read on scroll. I thought the web interface did this too, but I can’t see it. Now I’m confused 🤔
are you following too few subs? since the user base is smaller than that big corps lemmy simply has less daily content and this is especially noticed if you’re only following a few subs
I’m following about 70 communities.
On Pixelfed, I follow only two accounts so far, but I never see repeats.
70 is plenty. you should see new stuff a lot. i don’t see too much but i blame it on the fact that i don’t follow too many. i guess there’s something else here
I’ll keep experimenting and subscribing to more communities and see if it improves over time.
[email protected] can help
Already subscribed, thanks!
I subscribe to a lot too and I see a ton of the same content…. Idk where this plentiful good content is that people always go on about. I’m thinking it’s only political subs
The solution is to go to subscribe to Reddit RSS feeds so that we find stuff to repost here.
(Only half-joking)
Try changing your sort to new
- “sort”: that’s the word for the options of “new”, “scaled”, “active” etc, right?
- “New” does seem to improve things.
- @Die4Ever pointed out there’s a “Show Read Posts” option in the settings. I’ve unticked that and will see how it goes.
Thanks.

I honestly don’t use this feature myself lol but I hope it helps you!
Thanks!
