(Just in case this is a serious question to someone, 60% refers to the keyboard size, indicating what buttons I have and don’t have compared to a normal keyboard)
I have a 60% bluetooth keyboard that I’ll use when I need to type on my phone. A pain to carry with me, but taking a whole laptop is sometimes even worse.
Local news is dead. There are still local newspapers, but they are all just the same national and your state news with your neighborhood on the cover. Well they will publish the city and school board meeting notices, and the minutes, but nothing useful. (“after debated approved plan to X” - what where the points debated is never mentioned). No wonder such newspapers are dieing - they are not producing anything of value.
That is for individuals. Whichever side you are on. No alternative can exist without both creators and users in large enough numbers.
Asking which is first is a stupid question. Even if you could prove an answer it wouldn’t change a thing.

Only for the moment. Spammers have already found us, but so far in small numbers. All the other bad parts of social media are already here too, just so far not in large amounts and so you can find useful content. But those who gain from the garbage are coming and decentralization doesn’t help.
If you must be on those platforms (because face it, that is where grandma is) don’t doom scroll. I block all from the creator of shared memes on facebook - then when I block two I use that as a sign I’m done for the day. You should follow similar rules - make it clear that you want social media for social purposes and the memes, information (which is likely false or exaggerated), and everything else is not welcome to you. Alone you and I are nothing, but together we start to become a statistics that they will notice. Thus my plea that you follow similar rules as me in blocking the non-social parts and not doom scrolling - if there are enough of us they will be forced to make their platform more useful to keep us for one more ad.
So why are we talking - nothing gives me any indication you are in the same community as me (odds are strongly against it), so nothing is being organized. The world needs more ways to organize communities not large groups who don’t have a small communities in common to do something about.
Just like kde 4.0 and wayland were not marketed to consumers and yet consumers used them anyway and then decided latter releases marketed to consumers must also be bad.

Also pipelines. sure there is enough oil but canada has a pipeline to minnesota so canadan oil is what they use. North dakota oil does go through minnesota but to a different refinery someplace east that can use it.
brakes are not generally on the list for more than an inspection - which quick lube plates won’t do.
Until a line breaks and you discover it costs money to have someone fix it. Or a router gets attacked be someone evil and now you don’t have internet. Or … There are a lot of costs to running internet.
I don’t know how the costs compare to what AT&T is charging. I doubt you do either.
If it’s outrage, then that’s exactly what you’ll get
I don’t know how fix this, but this is one of the things a good algorithm needs to prevent. Outrage does get my attention - but it isn’t where I want my attention.
Algorithms done right are useful. Make sure things that are likely important to be bubble to the top. I don’t have time to read/watch it all, so prioritize the important things for me.
Done right is the hard part. It is too easy to prioritize memes that make people angry even though if you really investigate you discover that while there is a little truth it is grossly exaggerated and whoever is being mocked isn’t that stupid - because things that make people mad tend to get attention.
The algorithm really needs a “there is plenty more but you have seen all the important stuff - go outside and do something” after I’ve seen what is important. Of course it then needs a “but I’m currently confined to a hospital bed so just show me something so I’m not bored out of my mind”. The likes of facebook of course cannot allow such a thing as once you stop scrolling their ad revenue is gone. However that is what the world needs.
Give me reasons to stay. I ret really annoyed by all the garbage my friends share and thus how little value you provide. give me value and I’ll stay. Simple as that.
