I have an RTX 4070 ti super and it works great. But I use proprietary drivers.

What I don’t understand is how I could be throttling on temps. I’ve been watching them and the temps don’t go above 60c for either GPU or CPU. And the other thing is, it will say I’m throttling as soon as the game loads when the temps are in the 50s. I have also been using a different program to track temps and the most I’ve seen CPU temps is 79c from loading shaders.

Edit: looking at the config file for mango hud, it says : display GPU throttling status based on power, current, temp or “other”. It seems to me that, this popup appears if you have any 1 of those conditions.

Yes, I disable vsync for testing. I haven’t looked up too many benchmarks. I’ve been just watching the core clocks, temps and overall fps stability to determine if the performance is as it should be. I came across a reddit post saying that throttling in mangohud means that you’re using the most out of the PC parts and that’s what you want. So I’m going to not worry about it lol

Nvtop showed everything normal. The GPU power was below the TDP.

I don’t think so. I booted up a 2d side scroller game with the GPU usage at 40% and CPU at 9% and it still says I’m throttling just sitting at the main menu. I did put GPU power in mangohud but it always shows 0 watts.

Apparently it’s gets the info from the kernal.

I’m not sure. This is my first time using amd. I’m using linux mint on kernel 6.8.0-52. I typed in that command and nothing happened.

TBH I didn’t even try it, I just did a fresh install lol.

That’s reassuring. But based off the mixed answers, I’ll just do a clean install to reduce headache.

Thanks for the info. I’ll make sure to double check all that before. I have another question. If I edited fstab to add mounting hard drives on boot. Will I have to redo that when I hook my drive up to a new mobo? Or will the drive UUIDs and mount paths be the same?

Others say that I can drop my is drive into a new PC. I’ll back it up and try that, if not I’ll just do a fresh install.

Yes. I’ve made posts about my problems before. But I use an E drum kit to trigger vsts in a daw. It’s just easier for me to use windows.

I recently made the switch to linux as well and I have it on my laptop and gaming PC. I do keep a portable install of windows on an external drive for more niche cases, such as music production which I had terrible luck with on Linux. When I booted up my laptop with the windows drive, I noticed that my keyboard backlight wasn’t working. And it took me a second to realize that Windows doesn’t come with basic drivers… In Linux mint, my keyboard backlight worked right away. I also wish I made the jump to Linux much earlier.

I’m glad you had a better experience than I did. The past two nights, I was messing around with a live version of mint and had nothing but problems. The programs I installed from the software manager didn’t work and I couldn’t even get wine to work. I followed the instructions on mints site and wine kept having installation errors. I’m going back to ubuntu as I didn’t have these problems with that distro. Glad you’re up and running though!
