  • I’ve come to really like Adrian Tchaikovsky - I haven’t been disappointed by anything he’s written. The trilogy that starts with Children of Time is especially good.

Lots of others great books out there. The Space Between Worlds, by Micaiah Johnson, was an interesting story read recently. Kiln People, by David Brin, was great.

I keep little spoiler-free notes on everything I read, so if there’s a type of book you like, let me know and I’ll scan my notes.

  • We had two dogs, a cat, and a bird, so the house was always full of animal silliness. My wife left me a couple months ago and took the dogs with her. I’ve become so thankful for the cat. She just wants to be where I am, constantly: on my lap if I’m sitting, or on my chest if I’m laying down. It’s made a very hard time just a little less hard.

  • A couple years ago, after I sharply increased my reading, my wife (who paid the bills) came and said, “I don’t want to discourage you at all from a healthy hobby, but I wanted to make sure you realized that, in the last couple of months, you’ve spent like $200 on books.” In fact, I hadn’t realized it was that much. That’s when I started trying to figure out a cheaper way to read.

I read even more now. So far this year I’ve read 46 novels. That would be prohibitively expensive if not for Libby.

  • Yeah, I get it, it just feels very different to me. And, of course, as with all things, the line is blurry anyway. For instance, Orson Scott Card wrote an alternate history where the change is that American folk magic actually works, which seems pretty explicitly fantasy. It’s similar to the way it’s pretty hard to clearly differentiate between SF and fantasy. I get it, it’s just annoying.

  • Thanks for this. I read a huge amount of mostly SF, with some fantasy, and there are quite a number here (most of them) that I’m not familiar with, so I’m happy to have things to add to my reading list.

In the SF novel category, the only one I’ve read is Service Model, which I thought was excellent. A couple of the others are already on my to-read list.

In the fantasy novel category, the only one I’ve read is the winner, A Sorceress Come to Call (which I finished yesterday), and I really liked it as well.

Some of the others are ones I’ve looked up, but aren’t my thing (for instance, I don’t generally enjoy alternate histories, and it bugs me that they’re considered SF).

But several of the nominees look interesting. Looks like I’ve got more reading to do!

  • I retired in January after 40 years (not counting jobs during college). Marriage collapsed not long after (unrelated). So now I live alone and have nothing on my calendar. It’s honestly so very strange not having to go to bed early on a weeknight. Also, for some reason, the hours and days go very slowly, but the weeks and months go very quickly. Time is fundamentally different than it was previously.
