We have already crossed twenty-five years into the new century. The last century began with the promise of a proletarian revolution. Two world wars and tens of millions of deaths later, revolutions did occur in several states — but did they truly bring about the emancipation of the proletariat? By the century’s end, the Soviet Union had vanished, and in China and other so-called “socialist” states, private capital was flourishing. On the other hand, fascism has returned in the new century — bringing with it the spectre of world war and genocide.
