I’m still on Pop!_OS 22.04, the last release version. My applications are getting very out of date from being tied to the jammy package repo.
It looks like Pop.next is still in alpha, which suggests it could be 2026 before it’s RC. I don’t actually like any other distro — I built a new laptop on Mint, which I only tolerate. But I’m getting nervous, and the UIs for enough apps have evolved sufficiently that it’s creating some cognitive load to remember how to use both versions (LibreOffice and Evolution stand out).
What have people chosen to do?

Why not just distupgrade to 24.04 (cosmic)? If you don’t like the DE just install the one of your choice (I’ve been running it with plasma since the beginning of the year and it seems fine)
Install gnome on 24.04 and swap between cosmic and gnome on the login screen
At the risk of parroting what has been already stated, the COSMIC alpha is currently meeting all my needs, and feels quite polished. Depending on your use case, it could likely meet your needs as well.
I’m in the same situation. I’ve been a Linux user in some form for many years but I’m just now getting to the daily driver desktop stage. I’m trying to work out all the little nuances in migrating from macOS/iCloud. I’m doing it with Pop because that’s the distro that has felt the most natural to me. However, I’m finding that some of the apps don’t support my cloud syncing needs adequately (e.g., Calendar, Contacts, Reminders). Part of it is just finding the right cloud provider but I’m also. hoping the new COSMIC apps have better CalDAV and CardDAV support. At this point it’s just minor things so here’s hoping for a bit better results with the newer version. It’s Linux, though, so I’m sure I can find a solution.
I’ve heard pop’s alpha stage is a bit tongue in cheek. Maybe give it a shot and see how it goes? Then again, what if it goes poorly? Idk… Good luck.
I’m always hesitant to daily drive non-stable but you may be right. I played around with an early Alpha and it was pretty nice but also pretty bare bones.
It is quite stable and is actually much better at recovering during gpu driver timeouts than gnome is for me.
The only big gripe for me is how OSD’s like notifications or changing the volume cause full screen content to get letterboxing that can only be worked around by refullscreening.
It’s been a problem for at least a year now, here’s to hoping it gets fixed for the beta release.
Same here, Pop!_OS 22.04 NVIDIA edition. I’m on the fence about upgrading to the alpha. I tried wayland recently on 22.04 and didn’t work as well as x11. There was noticeable extra latency and it didn’t felt as smooth. Plasma was stuck at 60hz, even though GNOME did manage 144hz.
I’m curious if I should expect better results on the next release cause that was kinda worrying.
What hardware are you using?

I have it on a 3700X with a 3060, but that’s not my main system. Right now I’m working the migration mostly on a Dell Latitude I grabbed from work.

I am in a similar situation, even though I’ve switched my DE to sway, I’m stuck on Pop OS 22.04.
Since I actually liked COSMIC on my tests I’m waiting for its release and I actually might switch my DE to it, so I’m hesitant on moving to another distro.
They have announced that they are on their last alpha release now. If you are okay with running beta they might release it in a month or two

So I guess you only want apt based? In that case Ubuntu comes to mind
