As part of its efforts, the bloc has repeatedly introduced its Chat Control legislation, aimed at weakening the encryption that protects messaging services and force providers to provide a client-side backdoor for law enforcement.

These things are always sold as ways to stop pedophiles and traffickers but it will only marginally effect criminals and only the most incompetent criminals who probably would’ve been caught anyway.

There’s nothing stopping a criminal organisation from just forking signal or their foss app of choice.

In reality, it does make OPSEC somewhat harder, if you have to constantly remind yourself to not use WhatsApp, Telegram (LOL), whatever and exclusively use $CustomSignalFork to talk business. Human make errors.

BUT I really don’t think this is worth the loss of privacy as this is in no relation to the gains, that I can see. Also as I intentionally mentioned Telegram above - it’s hard to use “right” and this problem does already exist today to some extent which makes the bad trade off still worse. I mean, howany people are you really going “to get” with this?

Depends what you are looking for. They want to use this to find “child porn”, meaning any nudes of people under 18. How careful are horny teens going to be when they exchange nude selfies? Would a 13yo even know to be careful?
